Tactical Talk in Plague City

So what do you when your business is rolling drunks and the bars are closed?  Pity the working girls not on Facebook; bars are closed and drive-by-traffic almost non-existent, so who do they solicit?  A successful panhandler needs car traffic, what happens when that dries up?  And if you’re jonesing for a fix, it isn’t likely your dealer will extend you credit.

Let me remind you about the guiding principle bank robber Willy Sutton used:  Go where the money is.  Where your money is, I should say.

There are a lot of people wondering who will be their next payday, perhaps it is you.  The Feds are attempting to get $1200 into our pockets, but is it fast enough?  Will it last long enough?

More people are staying home so what might have been a B and E of an unoccupied dwelling becomes a home invasion.  Do you own a business, possibly closed, that could be a target for a break in?  Could you or another person be at that business when it happens? Is your parking lot secure?  Do you have a realistic plan in mind?

If you’re wearing N-95 or a homemade mask, some of your senses will be compromised.  Your glasses fog, your breath echoes in your ears, your range of vision is compromised and reduced.  Maybe instead of surgical gloves you’re wearing heavier, non-disposable gloves and your dexterity is for shit.

Soon or later most of us will have someone stricken by Covid-19.  More of the daily tasks will fall on our shoulders to cook, clean, take care of, go shopping and worry about.  Who would blame you for being distracted?  Perhaps each of us will be dealing with a protracted recovery period.   A simple walk around the block could be a major accomplishment.  An exhausted, distracted survivor or caregiver will be seen as simply another resource.

Two-footed predators don’t give a rat’s ass for your problem.  You are a solution to their problem.  You have things they want and they will attempt to take them.

Stay in condition yellow.  Beware of your surroundings.  Have the tools you need at hand.  Don’t depend on your size, strength or speed.  One of my instructors used to say, when coming off an injury, don’t attempt the technique responsible for the injury in the dojo until you can do it perfectly,at speed, at home.  He understood something about performance pressure.  Your body will betray you under extreme stress and frankly, being assaulted while recovering from COVID-19 is extreme stress.  Use force multipliers and the training you have.  I hope to God you actually have some training and are not just a mall commando.

Stay in places where other people are plentiful and practicing social distancing.  Going to car means get in and get the doors locked, not stand around checking your pockets for the keys.

Error on the part of caution!  Put the phone down and keep your eyes open and moving about.  See them and react to them before they see to you and make them respond to you.

Let’s get through this as cleanly as we possibly can.
